This post will share the details of my Sliema to Gozo and Comino day trip.

On the second day of my 72-hour stay in Malta, I visited Gozo and Comino.

I mean, what is a trip to Malta without one to Gozo?

Despite the cloudy and windy weather and several attempts to cancel, I booked a last-minute ticket and decided to go anyway.

Also, I didn’t have alternative plans for the day if I cancelled, so I just went.

I booked a From Sliema: Gozo, Comino & The Blue Lagoon Boat & Bus Tour on Get Your Guide and went with Luzzu Cruises.

One of the reasons why I stayed in the Sliema region was because of this tour.

The pick-up point, by the Sliema Ferry Terminal, was a five-minute walk from my hotel, so it was a no-brainer.

The staff at Luzzu Cruises were prompt and maintained a level of professionalism throughout the entire trip.

They were happy to answer questions and enquiries during the trip.

The itinerary was well done, and we had ample time to spend at all the destinations.

I advise buying your ticket in advance, as the day can be chaotic.

I had quite an eventful day and’ll share all the details.

Here’s What To See & Do On A Sliema To Gozo & Comino Day Trip

Gozo is the second-largest island in Malta, while Comino is a smaller island between Malta and Gozo.

After booking, I was emailed the trip instructions, including pick-up times, locations, what to bring, and how to identify the boats.

My pick-up time to join the boat was 10 a.m., and I was told to arrive by 9:40. I arrived at around 9:30 to a large queue ready to board both the 9:45 a.m. and 10 a.m. boats.

I stood in line, hoping to get in on time and get a good seat on the boat’s upper deck.

I got in eventually and got a seat in the first row.

Itinerary

Here’s the proposed itinerary provided by the company:

  • Gozo
  • Comino includes The Blue Lagoon, Crystal Lagoon, and the Sea Caves.

The day before booking the ticket, I spoke to one of the residents who reassured me that the weather would be fine for the next day.

I was very concerned about the strong winds and their impact on the trip.

Turns out, I had every reason to be concerned.

10:01 – 11:30 – Sliema to Gozo

At 10:01, we began our journey towards Gozo.

I was particularly excited because I had the perfect seat to try to make out the views through the clouds.

As we left the island shores, it started to get windy, and the ride became bumpy.

I tried to endure for about 30 minutes until I couldn’t take it any longer.

Yep, I started to feel seasick.

So I braced the wind and went downstairs to rest my head, hoping to contain my seasickness.

At this point, one of the staff members gave me a sickness bag.

I thought I would never use it as I’ve been on several cruises and never been sick.

Anyway, I took it from him in case.

After about an hour, we finally arrived at Gozo and began to disembark from the boat.

This tour also included a bus tour to Victoria, the capital of Gozo.

So, we were immediately transferred to the bus tour to start our journey to Gozo.

11.56 – 12:10 – Xlendi, Gozo

On our way to Victoria, we stopped by the Xlendi Bay for about fifteen minutes to marvel at the Xlendi cliffs.

At this point, I was still seasick, so it took all my effort to walk to the bay and take some pictures.

I also thought walking a bit would help clear my chest.

At the end of the fifteen minutes, I was slightly relieved.

12:28 – 14:21 – Victoria, Gozo

After another twenty minutes’ drive, we got to Victoria, the main town in Gozo.

We were given about 90 minutes to explore and return to the pickup point.

Unfortunately, since it wasn’t a guided tour, there wasn’t much to do except follow the crowd.

I grabbed some ice cream when we got to the town centre because I didn’t want to eat anything else.

Then I made my way to the Cittadella like everyone else.

This citadel dates back to the Bronze Age, so exploring it was fascinating.

As usual, I hiked to the top of the citadel to take panoramic pictures of the Gozo skyline.

While the viewpoint wasn’t so bad, I’ve seen better.

After walking around for a bit, I made my way back to the pickup point, being time-conscious, and grabbed another ice cream along the way.

I had to eat something, but this was also a bad idea.

14:38 – 16:00 – Comino, Malta

When we all returned to the pickup point, we drove another twenty minutes back to the Gozo port to board the boat to Comino.

The ride to Comino took about five minutes, after which we disembarked to explore the island for another ninety minutes.

As always, I hiked to the top of the hill to get a bird’s-eye view of the Blue Lagoon and the adjacent islet of Cominotto.

All that hiking was essential to buy time and prevent the temptation of buying something to eat.

Yes, at this point, I hadn’t had anything to eat all day.

After exploring Comino, we boarded the boat again and began the journey back to Sliema.

16:12 – 16:60 – Santa Maria, Comino

On our way back to Silema, we briefly stopped to marvel at the Santa Maria caves.

They were magnificent and unlike anything I’ve ever seen.

Although I’m not a swimmer or a diver, I can’t fully appreciate the breathtaking views.

The driver stopped so we could take enough photos and videos before returning to Silema.

16:16 – 17:35

The journey back was probably one of the worst sea journeys I’ve ever taken.

I generally have motion sickness, but this seasickness was the worst I’ve ever had.

Thankfully, the sickness bag handed to us came in handy, but it was still embarrassing.

After what felt like ages, the journey finally ended with my stomach empty.

I disembarked quickly to get some Italian food to replenish myself.

Silema To Gozo & Comino Alternative Route

While I recommend this day trip, you can take another route if you get seasick like me and want to reduce the journey.

You must take Bus 222 to the Cirkewwa ferry terminal, which takes about an hour.

From there, you can take the ferry ride to Gozo, which takes about 25 minutes and runs every thirty minutes.

It’s much shorter than the 90-minute journey, which makes more sense, especially if you are prone to seasickness.

When you get to Gozo, you can get the Hop On Hop Off Sightseeing Bus to explore.

If you want to add Comino to the trip, you can board a private boat at the Gozo ferry terminal.

Finally,

This Sliema to Gozo & Comino day trip is one for the books.

At the end of the day, this is what travel is all about.
